Colour Mixing at Tic Tocs
The Preschool children at our Devon Nursery Tic Tocs’ favourite activity is painting. Whether it’s an artistic flair of a paintbrush or a full on finger, hand and body paint: they love to be creative! Painting is a way for children to express their emotions, use their senses, explore colour and work through processes. It also gives them the opportunity to be proud or critical about the work they have produced.
Painting is a favourite activity throughout the whole nursery, and probably in your homes too! We’ve seen the outdoor sheds. We know how often it’s been washed out of the sofas!
For our Preschoolers, we wanted to take art to the next level and help practise their colour mixing. Favourite colours such as “purple” & “green” are popular paints when picking up the brush; but, how do we make them?
After exploring new discoveries such as red and white “make pink!” and noticing that the colours “change when mixing” , the children got very excited. Not only does colour mixing help children learn what colours make what, but it helps to encourage creativity! The children learnt if you mix too much, you end up with brown!
Painting activities to try at Home
There are so many things you can do to make painting exciting and new for your children. So ditch the brush and paper, why not try:
Using paint outside. Take your little artist and their paints to give the garden some colour! The poor sofas have had enough… Why not give the garden path a little character?
Body painting. Of course all the paint ends up on the body anyway, but make that the purpose! Give your children paint to step in (outside of course).
Try splatter painting… Let the brush go crazy and the art to be unique by splattering the brush hairs.
Make use of different utensils. What other things in the house can be used for your child’s creativity? (Stuff you don’t mind ending up with a brown tint!)
Ice cube painting! Try freezing coloured water and let your child’s imagination sink the canvas!
Marble rolling! Cover those marbles in paint and encourage your child to roll up a masterpiece!
